Ever heard of Bruegger's Stretch? It's an excellent stretch that reverses all the postures you're holding while sitting and working from your desk all day which can help relieve tight and achy neck, midback and shoulder muscles. Let's break it down. When you're sitting at your desk, chances are your back is hunched, your shoulders are rolled forwards and your neck and hanging out way too far in front of the rest of your body. What are these postures in anatomical terms? Check this out below:
-Hunched back: flexed thoracic spine -Forward rolled shoulders: flexed shoulders and pronated forearms -Neck hanging out too far in front of your body: neck protraction Bruegger's Stretch works to do the OPPOSITE of these postures which will give the muscles in your neck, midback and shoulders a break and also some movement (and we know that muscles love to move!). This movement will help reduce any tightness, aching or pain you may be experiencing from sitting at your desk job too long. Bruegger's Stretch will work to have: -Extended thoracic spine -Extended shoulders and supinated forearms -Neck Retraction Remember, motion is lotion! No posture is inherently bad in itself, but rather staying in one posture for too long is where you'll start running into trouble with tightness, soreness and aching in your body. The more intentional movement you can bring through your body, the less sore you'll be and who doesn't love feeling good? Give this stretch a try and we'd love to hear your feedback about it!
